For Sale - Ampeg Micro VR and two Ampeg SVT210AV cabs

I'm selling my Ampeg rig consisting an Ampeg Micro-VR and two Ampeg SVT210AV cabs (yes, two). It's in perfect condition, it’s loud, sounds awesome and I'm really sorry to see this go, but needs must and all that. I would like £500 for it. I’m sorry to see this go, but I’ve just bought my dream rig and need some room!

Delivery:

  • I'll drive 100 miles in your direction
  • collected from south Wales
  • or we could discuss couriers, etc. if that is better for you?

Say hi in the comments if you are interested in this fab little rig.

BTW, that lovely Fender Jazz isn't part of the deal ;)

ta

Chris

10 years ago today…

dadandaaron

10 years ago today, my eldest son was born.

He has spent his life enjoying the outdoors, joining me on bushcraft courses, wildcamps, hikes, climbs, MTB rides, Wainwright bagging and a multitude of other random (and sometimes harebrained) outdoor experiences.

A couple of weeks ago, he became a Sixer in his Cub pack. I was delighted as the Scouts shaped my enjoyment of the outdoors. I hope he sticks with it as he gets older.

Over the past 10 years he has developed into a smart, articulate and very confident young fella – he makes me proud every single day of my life. His two younger brothers (aged 3 and 5) are another story altogether ;)

Happy Birthday Aaron, you are a fab son, adventure companion and friend.

Dad x

Lusting after a Montane Sabretooth

Must be the good reviews and the (perceived) versatility of a softshell, but I’m really wanting one of these.

I never thought I'd say that about a softshell.

Anyone have one? What do you think? Will it keep ‘some’ rain off?

PTC likes it.

Edible foraging workshop

Very tempted by this seaweed and mushroom foraging workshop that I found on the (rather excellent) Visit Wales blog.

I won’t dupe’ the info here, so go take a look here.

I’ve been wanting to do something like this for several autumns. We’ve made other plans for this year (half term and all that), but I’ve put a reminder in Outlook for next year :)

Black Mountain from Glyntawe

rivercrossing

I managed to get out with Alan yesterday. It's the first time we have been able to get together for ages and as we are both seasoned wet weather walkers, we decided that we would go whatever the weather.

And what weather we had.

‘Knock you off your feet’ gusts, horizontal bullet-like rain, bright sunshine, zero viz and back to bright sunshine. The wind made the fantastic ridge walk just a little bit scary!

It was great to catch up and I'm looking forward to more over the autumn and winter.

Here's the route and if you fancy trying it, it involves a couple of river crossings.

Online shopping and the ‘User Experience’

As you may know, I work in digital media, creating websites for some pretty big organisations (we’ve just completed the new No10 website). So I appreciate websites that are designed around the user’s needs. I think we all do.

We all know and love our favourite specialist shops, like Bob’s Backpacking Light UK or Alpkit, but I was after a more standard bit of kit recently, something I would usually go to Blacks or Cotswolds for - some Paclite trousers to go with my Berghaus Paclite smock.

I finally gave in to one of those mysterious cookie driven adverts that seem to follow you around the web and clicked on the Simply Hike advert as I’d never seen the site before and their pricing was dead keen. They have a good range of Berghaus stuff.

The good

What a revelation. Take a look for yourself, but in a nutshell:

  • Great stock level info
  • Easy to find sizing info
  • The price range slider is really neat
  • Next day delivery countdown
  • Video explainers of the products (wow)
  • An easy to understand review system
  • A fit-o-meter (to establish if something is on the big or small side – IMHO, this is genius)
  • Price matching

I love Amazon, I spend a lot of money with them and I’m comfortable with the interface and use their review system, together with forums, as part of my purchase research. I trust Amazon’s system, but I tend not to take other site’s customer reviews that seriously.

But Simply Hike just blows away the Amazon shopping experience, as far as product info goes – I do this ‘User Experience’ (UX) stuff for a living and they have nailed it. However, Amazons “You may also like…” is spot on (and often has me increasing my order), Simply Hike’s is a little more random.

The bad not so good

I hate paying for delivery. I know someone has to pay for it, but to not get free delivery on a £70.00 spend upsets me. Yes, it’s only £3.99, but free delivery is an expectation now I believe.

When a website is this good, i don’t expect to have to hunt for products. In the ‘Outdoor Clothing’ section, waterproof trousers aren’t in a ‘waterproof’ section, but in a ‘trousers’ section. Or is it just me? Some basic user testing would have spotted that little annoyance in an instance.

But I’m really nit-picking!

I’ll be back

Anyway, I’ll be using them again for stuff I would normally go to Cotswolds or Blacks for – the videos are particularly useful and you can’t complain about the price match system. And bloody well done on the UX front!

For my more specialist needs (and brands), our favourite niche shops will continue to get my custom. There is always room in the long tail.

My goods arrived as promised – review soon!
