Butterfly bike for Lance

Damien Hirst has customised a ‘finish line’ bike design for Lance Armstrong using real butterflies.

I’m not sure how I feel about that, but it sure is pretty.

I wanted to use real butterflies and not just pictures of butterflies, because I wanted it to shimmer when the light catches it like only real butterflies do, and we were trying not to add any extra weight to the bike.

So many choices…

hilleberg akto caldera cone

Just planning a couple of days backpacking in Wales with Alan.

We covered so much of Wales on the Cambrian Way in 2007 (including lots of places we do want to go back to) that it’s getting tricky finding an unvisited area.

I know every square mile has its own unique character, but the feeling of driving through the lanes and seeing a hill or range for the first time is special for all walkers. Especially if you know you will be spending the night up there. I can still remember the first time I set eyes on Cadair Idris, the Rhinogs and even the Sugar Loaf.

Top three choices at the moment are:

  • Arans
  • Arenigs
  • Berwyns

I’m in route finding mode at the moment and as it’s likely to be our only trip this year, I want to make sure it’s a beaut. Any suggestions would be gratefully received :)

Gower Bike Ride 2009

I met up with Alan and Mike and 1500 other like minded souls and rode the Gower Bike Ride for BHF today.

The weather was beautiful and it was a great atmosphere as always. You can check out the route here.

Years ago, 5000 people used to do this ride – then they banned pub stops.

Tour de France – summer is here

ITV’s coverage of the greatest bike race on the planet starts tonight at 7.00pm and the race kicks off tomorrow in Monaco with a 15.5km individual time trial (a great chance to see how space age cycling has become).

I have been following it ever since I can remember and for me, the Tour IS summer. The official site is looking pretty good this year.

tourmap

With 21 stages, this year we can enjoy…

  • 10 flat stages
  • 7 mountain stages
  • 1 medium mountain stage
  • 2 individual time-trial stages
  • 1 team time-trial stage

Found a good video of the route…

There is a beginners guide and TV schedule on the ITV Sport site if you fancy giving it a go. You can download the official map and details of the stages here.

Son of Hibachi

Had a chance to try out a new BBQ last night – a smaller and more portable unit than my Bon-Fire setup. It’s called, rather amusingly, the Son of Hibachi. It’s marketed as the Grilletto in Europe, as apparently, we are too dumb to get the Son of Hibachi pun.

It is basically 2 x hibachi style grills bolted together that folds into a neat arrangement that allows quick and easy lighting.

BUT the best thing…?

Imagine you are down the beach, or your fave picnic spot, you have just had a barbie and it’s time to go home. Well, you just drop the hot unit into it’s fireproof bag – this does two things – stops your car boot from burning and snuffs the remaining charcoal so it can be reused.

We cooked halloumi kebabs on it last night (with the first broad beans of the year from the garden as a side – yeah!).

So far, so good. It works best if you pack it with briquettes and use a BBQ lighting gel to light it. It isn’t ready in 7 minutes as the blurb suggests – 15 is more realistic, but it cooks well and evenly and it’s very high quality.

It’ll be coming on all of our ‘big camping’ trips and days out. It’s a keeper!
