It's a great way to see the best of the area minus the crowds. I was lucky enough to come across the path to Fan Fawr by accident although I just went straight up the slope as I hadn't read the route description properly!

I have spent many a wet night in my akto and feel quite comfy cooking inside with the door closed until recently when I move my stove and melted a hole in the groundsheet just below the zipper that annoyed me very much.
I love your idea I'm currently looking at maybe making a custom footprint as I don't fancy paying the money for them new.

Some of the best places I've camped have been in farmers fields. I have been lucky enough to find some places in wales where the farmers are happy to let you sleep there for the night for a couple of pound.

The camp spot is on the north shore of Llyn Hywel at the base of Rhinog Fach - a great spot in good weather but very demanding if it's not! especially with a youngster.

I was interested in your question about wild camp sites in South Wales. I live on the border in Herefordshire and have wanted to take my young son for a night out in the wilds but haven't yet found a suitable site. I have looked at the Black Mountain but there is a bit of water shortaage up there in the summer. I'll keep a check on your blog to see if anyone replies.

I also saw your photo taken in the Rhinogs. Where was the photo taken as I've often thought the Rhinogs would be good if you could find a big enough gap between the Heather and rocks

Amazing scenery, Wales is such a gorgeous place - I'm planning to go camping and hiking around the welsh hills rather than going abroad this year, finder crossed for a lovely summer!

Very belated comments here! We have the same tent, also bought from PBW, and we absolutely love it - we've been camping in it every summer for the last three years. We thought your pictures of the tent hooked up on the inside looked very comical though... as far as we have always understood, the loops are intended for an inner tent to hook onto - we remember that at the time we bought the tent, there was an option to buy an inner which hooked inside. Your idea looks ingenious though! We actually use the loops to hang inspection lamps on when we are camping - though for preference we hang a lantern from a wrench clamped near the top of the pole!

I have just come across your excellent article, with its admirably restrained response to (the) Anon(ymous trail-bike rider). Agreed, off-road motorcyclists do not have enough of their own places to enjoy their sport; but, until they do, the answer is not for that minority to desecrate the countryside with impunity, nor for the majority meekly to tolerate their irresponsible and antisocial behaviour. Their activity MUST be stopped. Alan Sloman is spot on with his advice to photograph the offenders and report them to the police. As he says “Zero-tolerance is the only effective means of stopping them.”

It was precisely in accordance with this principle that CAMARM, the CAMpaign Against Rogue Motorcycling, was launched in May 2006 in response to an escalating problem in the southern fells of the Lake District. Intended to replace the question “Why don’t THEY … ?” by “What can I …?”, www.camarm.info describes the problem, with photographs, and offers solutions. I recommend it to anyone concerned about our countryside.

I hated Inov8's too, they just didn't work for me at all and I sold them on Ebay, but every pair of Salomon's I've ever had have been like slippers.
Personally, I don't like boots, although there are certain instances where ankle support is good to have, but when I backpacked the Cambrian Way, ankle support was not an issue, even in the Rhinogs and through Snowdonia.
I would probably use by 'big boots' if I was doing winter stuff in Cairngorm.
The Cosmic's look fab, but personally, I'm not keen on Goretex, I only use my Goretex shoes if the weather is really, really bad and cold - I would prefer less weight and wet feet during spring, summer and autumn!

Yeah, I went through the second wave of 'aren't Inov8s great' and tried out two pairs of Terroc 330s. They fell apart around the soles, rubbed a bit and wore away around the inside ankle. So I have tried, but went back to my meindls after that.
Now as it happens I have very picky feet that rub and blister very easily and the best boots I ever had were 'Salomon X-Adventure 7'. Having read a review here (http://www.stridingedge.net/Salomon%20Cosmic%204D%20GTX.htm) I am toying with the idea of some 'Salomon Cosmic 4D GTX's. The point is that the Salomon fit seemed to work for my feet in the past and could be good for me again. Hence my question really.

Hi Baz, Designed for running but perfect for walking. I have been using trail running shoes instead of boots since 2007, even in winter (Goretex Salamon's). I can't imagine going back to boots now. Give it a go, it will change your life!
